A beautiful Brut to see in a new year!
It’s been an interesting year for us. One that started with the three of us taking craft and independent products into the trade, progressed to us appearing at markets, events and festivals as beer educators promoting craft beer, and has ended with us doing all of these things and blogging to boot!
We would like to wish all of our followers a very happy and safe new year and hope that with fine spirit and craft brews, we can help you make 2012 better than 2011, and if we can’t, our offerings will certainly help you through it.
So, from Rouvanne, Lenny and myself, Cheers!
Gecko - So stylish!
After our article on fusion vodkas on Wednesday, there has been a lot of excitement. The comments started coming through thick and fast as did the emails and Twitter messages. There were of course, positive and negative responses, but I did promise to post any responses from the brands that I got. Here are the answers from Gecko Vodka to the questions I asked:
Gecko Caramel TwoVodk Liquor
1. Who is the brain behind Gecko?
Gecko and the concept of Caramel Vodka was first conceived by Francisco Javier Fernandez Vega. Javier started his own small multi-brand distribution company in the early 1990’s but after realizing that margins in the industry were shrinking due to the merging of numerous larger distributors, he had the idea of creating his own brand of beverages that could be marketed without relying on anyone. The flagship product was to be the Caramel Vodka stemming from the fact that in Spain, people like to experience liqueurs but not necessarily the alcoholic taste associated with them. Fusion vodkas make yummy cocktails
Vodka Fusions seem to be appearing more and more. The first one that I was introduced to (like most of us) was, Lovoka Liqueur Fusion. Then I started noticing other “copy cats” popping up Carvo, FUSIONice and Thunder. But who is the original and who is the copy cat? The liquor industry is cut throat and every original recipe and idea needs to be launched, marketed, implemented and guarded very carefully in order to become a success and Lovoka seemed to have got their formula right from the start.
The original Original
While looking around on the web for other vodka flavour fusions, I stumbled upon a Spanish product, Gecko Vodka. They claim to be the original caramel vodka and their product is packaged in a very familiar aluminium bottle. So I started asking questions. Two brands in particular came back to me, Lovoka and FUSIONice and their answers piqued my curiosity. Here is what they had to say: Continue reading

It’s Bok Friday and we are wearing our green and drinking our gold. The crisp, dry, golden Everson’s Cider is officially a year old today!
The company, Everson’s Cider, was formed in September 2010, the branding was revamped with new labels and marketing material and the production grew to accommodate the growing demand for Everson’s Cider. Continue reading
An exception-to-the-rule gin
Every now and then a product comes along that makes me think ‘‘Wow! This is just perfect!” The problem being that this seems to happen every time Roger Jorgensen releases a new product from Jorgensen’s Distillery in Wellington and so this has occurred 5 times in the last 8 months!
We have just received our first load of Jorgensen’s Gin and it took just one sip to fall in love. Roger has once again created a product that is outstanding and this gin is going to bring great joy to all who are lucky enough to enjoy it! Continue reading
More beer please
Launching a new brand is a daunting process. Of course one has to ensure that you have a good product to start with, but no matter how much you love it, you need to get other people to feel the same about it as you do and have faith that there is a market for it. And you have to get the “Big Boys” to believe enough in it to buy in.
Pour one to love one
Every brand wants to be included in the big corporates product listing because of their massive buying power and the fact that their stores have a national footprint. Companies like Pick n Pay and Tops at Spar are by far the biggest and although they aren’t “small-business friendly” (I’ll get to this) we have to get our products in there if we want to ensure success. We’re in, and we’re working our backsides off to make it work. Continue reading
A very full stand for beer lovers
It was quite a hectic couple of weeks in the World Focus offices. When you have two arms to the business, the distribution and bulk-breaking that we do during the week getting our products into stores around the Western Cape, and our eventing side where we take products to events and festivals and educate the public about beautiful new products that are available through the Beer Garden. Continue reading
We have had loads of requests for Lovoka Fusion Liqueur and to date, Cape Town has had a serious shortage of the wonderful flavoured fusion liqueurs. You can see from our comments page how many people are passionate about this product range, and with the demand country-wide, it is pretty much pure excitement! Continue reading

Welcome to the family!
Last night we popped into the the Wine Affair at the V&A Waterfront to visit the Everson’s Cider stand, and followed that by collecting some stock from the Jorgensen’s Distillery stand at the Taste of Cape Town festival in Green Point. Not a bad way to spend an evening!
Look out for this label!
Our main reason for excitement was that we were able to meet up with William, Garda & Glynis from Everson’s to get our contract formalised and to be able to raise a toast to a future of working together.
Everson’s Cider fits in so nicely with all our other beautiful products, and we’re especially proud to have another superb quality, hand-crafted South African beverage to offer our clients. And there isn’t a more wonderful way of being able to say “Cheers!” to the future than with the product in hand! Continue reading
